Biggest freshwater fish species? Giant Mekong Catfish
What about the Giant Mekong catfish, which have no scales?
How to age a fish (rings on scales?) – 3 ways
- Rings on scales
- Plate that cover the gills
- Rings on otoliths
- Rings on the vertebra

- Indeterminate growth; fishes will keep growing larger for as long as they live, therefore, the larger fishes tend to be the oldest ones.

Close contenders;
- Freshwater stingray (up to 1,200 lbs)
- Chinese paddlefish (21 foot long)

White sturgeon (Pacific Coast) – 1,600 pounds (?) Columbia river record, (look it up)

Wels catfish
Tai men – 2 meters (world’s largest trout)

Exclusively freshwater sturgeon – lake sturgeon (still unknown)
lake sturgeon (send leads through extreme science website to Zeb in an email)

At what point in your life/education did you decide to focus on large megafishes?
While studying for his PhD. He studied the Giant Mekong catfish and began to understand that many of the world’s largest inland freshwater lakes and rivers contained one or more species of giant megafishes - freshwater fish criteria, over 6 feet and 200 pounds. He wanted to call attention to the endangered status of these magnificent fish.
